In traditional SEO, freshness is a tiebreaker. In generative search, it’s closer to a gate. When we look at what models actually cite, the age distribution is startlingly tight: the overwhelming majority of cited pages were published or meaningfully updated within the last year.
Why models lean fresh
Two mechanics push citation toward recent material. First, retrieval layers are re-indexed continuously, and newer documents enter the candidate pool with cleaner metadata and fewer broken references. Second, models are tuned to avoid stale or contradicted claims, and the cheapest proxy for “not stale” is “recently published.”
The result is a system with a short memory by design. A page that earned citations a year ago is not guaranteed to hold them; as fresher material enters the pool, older pages quietly fall out of the answer.
Citation is not a one-shot prize. Models continuously re-rank what they trust, and freshness is one of the strongest signals in that re-ranking.
What “fresh” actually means
Freshness is not a publish date in a meta tag. Models infer recency from the whole document: updated statistics, current references, live links, and language that reflects the present state of a topic. A 2024 article with a 2026 date stamp and no substantive changes does not read as fresh, and is treated accordingly.
- Stats and figures that match the current year.
- References to recent, still-resolving sources.
- Claims phrased in the present, not the historical, tense.
- Internal consistency with the rest of your live content.
The operational consequence: a refresh loop
If recency decays, then visibility decays with it, which makes the right unit of work a loop, not a launch. The pages you are cited on need to be scanned for decay, updated where it matters, and kept current. This is the core of the Sustain movement: refresh, re-seed, and watch the rankings shift daily.
The takeaway
Treat your cited pages like instruments that drift out of calibration. The ten-month rule isn’t a deadline. It’s a reminder that in generative search, the work of staying cited is continuous, and the brands that keep winning are the ones that keep shipping.
